For many years, the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) has been pursuing the goal of strengthening the financial literacy of the Austrian population and imparting financial education: Building on our meins app developed for adults in 2020, this knowledge is now also being passed on to 9-12 year olds with the meiki app.
As part of a co-creation workshop with the OeNB's education team, we developed solutions to help children acquire basic financial skills. By setting savings goals, children can track their individual wishes and feed their virtual piggy bank. The playful UI creates an understanding of their own progress at a glance and shows children how much time and money is needed to achieve their set goal. In addition to pursuing savings goals, children can learn more about the origins of our currency and about financial responsibility through playful approaches such as a who-will-be-a-millionaire quiz or picture puzzles, while at the same time collecting points and advancing in level to take part in great competitions.
NOUS developed the basic concept, design and game mechanics for a hybrid app: designed as an official teaching tool, the application should also have links to the primary and secondary school curriculum and enable playing and learning in individual school classes through a leaderboard feature.
