WebsiteRivaling Reality
Reality as a challenge - and as an artistic promise. Since the 1960s, Photorealism has entered into a confident dialogue with photography, exploring just how far painting can go in its pursuit of precision.
With “In Competition with Reality: 60 Years of Photorealism,” the Museum Frieder Burda presents more than 90 masterpieces of this fascinating movement from 28 February to 2 August 2026. Artists such as Richard Estes, Audrey Flack, Ralph Goings, and Ron Kleemann transformed everyday subjects into iconic pictorial worlds of astonishing detail. International loans — including works from the Whitney Museum of American Art - trace the development of Photorealism through to the present day.
Our audio guide invites visitors to take a closer look: How are these deceptively real images created? What do they reveal about perception and the power of visual media? Featuring background information on the artists and art-historical insights, the guide opens up new perspectives and deepens engagement with the works on display.
The audio guide is available on on-site devices in German, English, and French, accompanying visitors on a roughly one-hour journey through the exhibition - a precise and captivating exploration of 60 years of Photorealism.
