The Virgilkapelle - one of the best-preserved Gothic interiors in Vienna - reopened in 2015 following extensive restoration work. The confined and spatially limited conditions of this unique sacred space posed a particular challenge. We developed a multimedia guide that serves as a subtle extension of the exhibition area, giving the rich and layered content the space it requires. Audio tracks in German and English, accompanied by medieval choral music, create an atmospheric and immersive experience.
Almost ten years later, we have technologically updated this concept. Building on the existing interpretive approach, the guide is now implemented as a modern, offline-capable Progressive Web App (PWA), ensuring long-term operation within the historic environment. The familiar design and proven content remain in place, complemented by an inclusion mode with enlarged fonts and optimized contrasts.
By implementing the guide within an offline-capable container, we ensure stable operation independent of network coverage. At the same time, we are modernizing the device infrastructure and providing new hardware to establish a robust, maintainable, and future-ready technical foundation.
In this way, the Virgilkapelle continues to offer an atmospheric experience - sensitively enhanced through digital interpretation, reliably implemented, and sustainably maintained. The update can be experienced on site from March 27.
