The largest museum of modern and contemporary art in Austria works intensively with its collection and usually presents this in parallel to the changing exhibitions. In line with the museum’s strategy to make the collection and exhibitions – and associated descriptive material – available to as many people as possible, NOUS has reworked its guide, which has been in use since 2005, and designed a content pool and a mobile tour management system for the museum. This has meant that the art education team itself can flexibly edit audio and multimedia tours of the collection and temporary exhibitions, publishing these just in time as a public app or guide. So that the content can be used on visitors’ own private devices, the tours are available for free download as a public app; devices are also available for loan in the museum. Within the museum, visitors trigger iBeacon technology, enabling their devices to display the very exhibits that they are near. This technology makes complex menu structures redundant and visitors are able to devote their whole attention to experiencing the artworks.
