Since 2015, we have been advising the museological team at Louvre Abu Dhabi on the conception and implementation of its digital interpretation strategy. For the first universal museum in the Arab world, we developed a multimedia guide, public apps, and a dedicated children’s app. Since the museum opened in 2017, visitors have been able to explore its impressive architecture and collections intuitively, access in-depth texts and audio content on selected works, and learn more about the history of art and the museum’s unique architecture - in seven languages.

Through location-based services and an interactive map, visitors can easily navigate the museum’s many galleries and spaces. Particular emphasis has been placed on inclusion: a dedicated mode for visitors with visual impairments has set new standards for multimedia guides.

In 2023, the app was fundamentally reconceived and redesigned. It now fully follows a “Bring Your Own Device” approach and integrates new interpretive formats such as podcasts. In addition to navigation, the app uses AI-supported artwork recognition to provide visitors with relevant object information and audio content. Games and quizzes offer further accessible and interactive ways to engage with the collection, encouraging visitors to relate the works to their own lives - regardless of their prior knowledge of art history.

The integration of the AI-based chatbot Ask Mona further expanded the digital visitor experience. The multilingual assistant is embedded directly in the Louvre Abu Dhabi mobile app, giving visitors an intuitive, conversational way to access information about the museum and its content. Dynamic QR codes installed throughout the museum link directly to relevant Ask Mona experiences, seamlessly connecting the physical museum space with digital interpretation.

Our work for Louvre Abu Dhabi therefore represents one of the most comprehensive digital interpretation ecosystems in the museum sector and serves as an important reference for innovative museum experiences in the Middle East.
