The Egyptian Museum (Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst) in Munich is the most extensive museum of its kind in the German-speaking world. The museum has set itself the task of making it once again possible to touch and experience exhibits from bygone days. To do so, it uses the sophisticated technology of the NOUS Guide. 

NOUS has realized this vision of a new museum that comes alive by creating a guide with positioning functions and 3D interactions, which guides visitors – not just literally but also virtually – through the world of Ancient Egypt. Visitors choose between a “highlights” tour and a “free” tour. A “pantheon” tour was designed especially for children. Thanks to 3D interaction, it is possible to see many objects from all sides, while it also enables visitors to journey back through time to experience “live” how stone pots were made. 

On their way through the exhibition, visitors are virtually accompanied through the rooms with the aid of new positioning technology. Both their location and the surrounding objects – as well as the shortest path to the next point of interest – are shown in a 3D rendering of the room on their guide’s display. The bilingual museum guides – available for free to every visitor to the museum – provide additional information such as recon- structions, comparable objects, audio files, and videos about the various exhibits. Furthermore, a translation function shows every wall text and exhibit label in six additional languages. A special accessibility mode has been installed for visually impaired visitors. In August 2020 the existing guide was updated with the addition of special content for children between the ages of 7 and 10. The museum’s mascots Isi and Usi invite young visitors on a thrilling journey through Egyptian art. The children’s guide features 18 exciting games, video sequences, and audio descriptions all about Egyptian art. Since fall 2021 new tablets and ultrawideband (UWB) are used for indoor navigation.
