The newly opened Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi in the Saadiyat Cultural District showcases some of the rarest natural history specimens in the world. Through a spectacular narrative environment, the museum tells the fascinating story of our planet - from its formation and the evolution of life to contemporary questions around the environment, scientific research, and humanity’s future in space. As both a scientific institution and an educational destination, it combines authoritative knowledge with an inspiring experience for visitors of all ages.
For this extraordinary museum, NOUS developed a comprehensive mobile visitor experience, initially available on loan devices on-site and later released as a public app. The concept provides visitors with an innovative tool: a digital companion that supports orientation, deepens key highlights, and makes complex topics tangible - following the principle of What it is / Why should I care / What can I do. Depending on their interests, guests choose from a selection of AI-generated guides that accompany them on their journey and respond to their individual needs.
The project spans the full spectrum - from concept, storytelling, and content production to app development and the integration of AR features and interactive spatial views. The result is an immersive journey through time and space: from the Big Bang to a visionary future of our planet. Visitors can experience iconic exhibits such as the legendary Tyrannosaurus rex “Stan” or the Murchison meteorite in entirely new ways. Cutting-edge AR and AI technologies - including image recognition - seamlessly blend past and future, transforming the museum visit into a powerful and interactive experience.
